ONU Blog #1 - My first impression of America

My first impression of America

On August 9th, my new adventure has begun. It took me 20 hours to fly from Japan to America. This is my first time studying abroad.

I looked out the airplane window, and saw America for the first time. As I watched Hollywood movies, there were many large buildings. However, there was the greatest difference in a residential district. Because Japan is a small country, a residential district is crammed with houses. On the other hand, America is one of the largest country in the world so that each house has a large garden. I thought that Americans tend to have emotional leeway in their lives.

When I arrived at the airport, I got lost with my big suitcases and I was wondering. Then, many kind and warm hearted people came to help me, so I was very happy. Moreover, I met an American girl, Mary who has experience studying abroad. She gave me advice about how to put it to full practical use and gave me her phone number. She was so kind to a strange Asian person and I got embarrassed because I assumed that Americans were unfriendly. However, I was totally wrong. Because of the differences in appearance and language, they seemed to be enemy, but in fact, they are so sweet.

I have come to like America, and I am excited to my new lifestyle in ONU!

  1. I absolutely love your photo comparison of the American neighborhood style versus the Japanese neighborhood style. There is quite the difference and I think that it is very useful and informative! Like how you did not expect certain things when coming to America, I can imagine that Ada, Ohio might be not what you were expecting to see here. I think that I would love to do an exchange program someday. There is so much out there I wish to see! I hope that you enjoy your time here in America and certainly here at Ohio Northern. GO BEARS!

  2. I love this post so much! I would be so terrified to go study in a completely new environment. I'm so happy that you have come to like it as much as we do and I'm glad that you ended up at ONU. I'm sure getting lost at first in the airport was terrifying but I'm happy you ended up finding your way. Go bears!
