Critical Analysis of Reading Blog #6 - Reply Marketing on Twitter

Replay Marketing on Twitter

"Social media marketing workbook 2017" which is written by Jason Mcdonald gives some tips for social media marketing on Twitter. Among them, I will focus on "reply" and explain how to use it in social media marketing.

"Reply Marketing" is a means of being realized and used services. By using this method, enterprises can find new customers who do not know their services yet.

Here are some examples.
If someone, who do not know he can rent private homes and got a concert's ticket in a distant place, and he cannot find a hotel he can stop at, he will give up the concert. In this kind of situation, enterprises can offer their service by using "reply."

There is other practical example of "reply marketing." When someone tweeted,"Need a new laptop," official Windows account replayed and offered their computers.

Enterprises can search these tweets by searching keywords, not only their company names, like "Windows," but also "new computer" or "computer."

"Reply Marketing" helps to discover new customers.

PR/Social Media Blog #6 - The moral bias behind your search results

The moral bias behind your search results

Andreas Ekström talked about "The moral bias behind your search results" at TED Talks.

"Why do you Google?"
"Why is Google the search engine of choice for you?"
At the beginning, he asked these questions. Is it true that Google always give us the best, unbiased search result? He explains it with two examples.

- Michelle Obama

In 2009, Michelle Obama was the victim of a racist campaign. There was a picture distributed widely over the internet, a didtorted monkey picture. Therefore, when you picture-Googled for "Michelle Obama" in 2009, the picture showed up among the first results. However, Google fixed the search results.

- Anders Behring Breivik

In 2011, he blew up a couple of government buildings, killed a group of kids, and controlled the image of himself in his search results. Also in this case, there was a picture distributed widely on the internet, dog poop. However, this time, Google did not intervene.

There is no different between what happened to Michelle Obama and what happened to Anders Behring Breivik, but Google intervened in one case and not in the other.
An evaluation of a person by Google has an influence on search results.

Google is not always a good idea to look for knowledge because there is a bias. To get to knowledge, you should research by myself with true story.

ONU Blog #6 - Culture Shock 2

Culture Shock 2

It has been two months since I arrived ONU and I encountered many things that are very different compared to Japanese culture. Therefore, I will handle this topic again.

- The tradition of removing shoes in home

In Japan, people take off shoes when they enter their house. Because Japan has a climate with high temperatures, high humidity and a lot of rain, it makes the floor dirty and causes sanitary problems if they come into their house with their shoes. By doing that, people can sit on the tatami, a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms, and spread futon on the floor.

Moreover, there are other countries where people take off shoes in their house.
Example: Korea, Southeast Asia, East Asia, China, Turkey, Alaska, Canada, Norway

- Box culture at restaurants

When I went to a restaurant, I was surprised that American food is really big and always cannot finish it.

And with that, I was saved by Box culture.

In Japan, if people cannot finish their meals, they cannot take out their remnants of food. This is because the food will decays and there is a possibility of food poisoning. The restaurant cannot be responsible for that. In addition, people in Japan have a custom to take only what they can eat and not to leave food.

PR/Social Media Blog #5 - Social Media Effects on Teens

Social Media Effects on Teens

In the TED Talk, “Why Thinking You’re Ugly Is Bad for You,” the speaker talks about the low self-esteem among teenagers created by social comparison in an image-obsessed culture. They care about the way they think they look, not how they actually look.

It has an impact on both academic achievement and their health. Because they have lower self-esteem, they take more risks with alcohol and drug use. Also, it has a great impact on society. To solve this serious problem, the speaker suggested three way: educating for body confidence, being better role models, and working together.
As the TED speaker said, teenagers reflect how they believe others see them, independently of their judgement is true or not. And, they evaluate themselves by social comparison. Reference group, such as their family, friends, club activity, and company, would be their comparison.
The way they look is just a part of their identity.

I think self-esteem in their appearance in Japan is lower than that in America.  Because of their "ideal" imagination, some Japanese teenagers have an operation to put folds in their eyelids or make up as if they had plastic surgery.

However, people try to solve this problem. In 2018, Miss America ends swimsuit competition and the movement was a topic all over the world with #byebyebikini.

Also, in Japan, beauty contest is famous in almost all universities. However, these days, some of them started to abolish the contest. People argue for and against the measure, but it is true that the society started to change this bad habit.

We must not judge people by only one perspective.

ONU Blog #5 - Movie Theater Differences

Movie Theater Differences

On September 22, I went to Easton Town Center in Columbus with my friends and  saw a movie, "The Spy Who Dumped Me." This was my first time watching comedy movie and the movie was interesting, but more than that, I was surprised the movie theater differences between the US and Japan. So, today I would like to describe the differences.

1. Price of movie tickets

The price here was 10.99 dollars. It is cheaper than in Japan. The price of movie tickets in Japan is evenly about 18 dollars for adults. Besides, there is a discount day for the ladies every Wednesdays so that women can watch movies only for 11 dollars. There is also a discount day for everyone on the first day of each month. It is called "First day," and people can watch only for 11 dollars. Besides this, services comes with benefits such as discounts at membership. But still, the price in the US is always cheaper than that in Japan. I am so jealous!

2. Do not laugh out loud

While I was watching the movie, partly because it was a comedy movie, but people laughed out loud and I was really surprised. Many people in Japan laugh quietly or with restraint even if the movie was a comedy.
In a similar way, Japanese TV drama does not use laugh tracks. I think it is related to the nationalities.

Critical Analysis of Reading Blog #5 - 360-degree video and VR

360-degree video and VR

These days, social media is growing up rapidly so that new social media strategies, 360-degree video and VR, have been introduced.

Using video is one of the most effective marketing strategy and has experienced significant growth. For example, Hong Kong Airline's 360-degree advertisement was 35 times more effective than the same 2D advertisement.

According to Hubspot, 43 percent of people want to see more video content from marketers. Moreover, Facebook hits 100 million hours of video watched a day(https://techcrunch.com/2016/01/27/facebook-grows/).

360 videos are suited for showing your brand, highlighting a live event, featuring adventure, and creating a short film.

As the technology of 360° and VR video improves, the equipment becomes cheaper.
The appeal of 360° and VR will only spread across all industries swiftly.

ONU Blog #4 - 33rd Annual Ada Harvest & Herb Festival

33rd Annual Ada Harvest & Herb Festival

On September 15, I joined 33rd Annual Ada Harvest & Herb Festival at Main Street with my friends. I didn't see the parade at 10 am, but I enjoyed the first festival I experienced in America!

Firstly, I was really surprised the special atmosphere of the festival. At usual weekend, there are not too many people on campus and around it. It is totally quiet. However, this weekend was different. I never knew that there are so many people in Ada!

Secondly, how to interact with customers is different from that in Japan. The clerks talk a lot with the customers like speaking to a close friend. I was really happy when one of the clerk spoke to me in Japanese, "どうもありがとう(Thank you very much)."

Also, when I went to Columbus to go shopping in Tanger Outlets, the clerks spoke to me not only "May I help you?," but also "My name is 〇〇." or "This is today's special." and so on. I was amazed because Japanese clerks definitely do not give us their name! This is cultural difference. Japanese tend not to speak too much because they love personal space. I think the difference is just a cultural one and both of them are good.

I could experience such a wonderful festival because I study abroad in country side! If I were in a large city, I couldn't join this unique festival. I could find a new good point of this small town, Ada :)

PR/Social Media Blog #4 - How to express smile and laughter on social media

How to express smile and laughter on social media

As people in the world speak different languages, the way to express smile and laughter on social media is different from country to country. I would like to focus on emoticons and symbols which means smile or laughter.

- Emoticons

As you know, emoticons are generally written sideways.
:) is a happy face
;) is a wink
:P is sticking out your tongue

On the other hand, in Japan, emoticons are oriented right side up and a bit more detailed.
(^_^) is a happy face
(-_^) is a wink
(;_;) is crying

Moreover, the number of emoticons in Japan is larger than that in America. It is said that this is because Japanese prefer to use Japanese made items. In addition, there are a lot of ASCII art which is a graphic design technique.

- Other emoticons in Japan
ʕ๑•ω•ฅʔ
٩(๑´0`๑)۶
(*ˊᵕˋ*)੭ ੈ
(You can search other emoticons here.)

- ASCII art
    @@@@
   @ Happy @
  ∩@Birthday@
 (・ω・@@@@
  ヽ っ\ /
  ∪∪ /∞ヽ
(A cat holding a bouquet for birthday)

 ∧,_,∧
(`・ω・)つ━☆・*。
⊂ ノ ・゜+.
 し’´J *・ °”
(A cat casting a spell)

- Symbols which means smile or laughter

Symbols which means smile or laughter are also different from country to country.

English: LOLOLOLOLOL
Japanese: wwwww
Korean: ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Chinese: 哈哈哈, 呵呵呵
Thai: 55555
Spanish: jajaja
French: mdr
Italian: ahahahah
Indonesian: wkwkwkwkwk
Russian: xaxa
Portuguese: kkkkkkkkk, rsrsrsrs

It is interesting to search the difference of emoticons or symbols. Please try to use different one on social media!

Critical Analysis of Reading Blog #4 - Tricks for Facebook

Tricks for Facebook

"The Art of Social Media" which is written by Guy Kawasaki illustrates tips for Facebook in Chapter 11. I was not used to use Facebook in Japan because most of my Japanese friends don't use Facebook.  I created my account only in order to connect with my overseas friends. Therefore, I started to use it in a big way. Because of that, I don't really know how to use it. So, I'll share some tricks that I found on the internet!

- How to examine the relationship between someone and someone

This is a frightened way, but if you like someone and want to know about his/her friends or want to know whether he/she is dating with someone or not, you can use this trick.

1. Preparing two usernames, which you want to know the relationship between them
2. Typing "?and=" between the two username and searching it

That's all. It's so easy to do, but you can find pictures they're in together, their mutual friends, and the time when they became friends on Facebook!

- How to using the hidden emoticons

1. Just typing "[[iidislyk]]," "[[midfing]]," "[[roxsign]]," "[[nyancat]]," "[[song]]," "[[selenderman]]," "[[facebook]]" and so on.

Please check these tricks out, and you can enjoy using Facebook more!

Podcast with Zoey, an influential YouTuber in ONU

Critical Analysis of Reading Blog #3 - How to use #(hashtag) effectively

How to use #(hashtag) effectively

Even though the Oxford dictionary officially defined the term "hashtag" ten years ago, hashtags are popular through the use of social media. "The Art of Social Media" which is written by Guy Kawasaki explain how to make hashtags effective.

I have never used hashtags because I do not post much on social media.
Therefore, I am interested in what hashtag is or how to use it. Today, I will analyze hashtags.

First of all, "hashtag" is a word or phrase proceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text.

Interestingly, each social media has different characteristics so that how to use hashtags effectively depends on which media to use.

On twitter, it is important to follow the trend (The recommended number of hashtag: 2-3). On Instagram, people tend to share fashionable photos so that they use hashtags in order to get more likes by others (The recommended number of hashtags: 5-15). On the over hand, people who are using Facebook put emphasis on interpersonal connection (The recommended number of hashtags: 1).

Top-Hashtags.com shows the ranking, "Top 100 Hash Tags on Instagram."

As you can see from this ranking, people on Instagram are creative-minded and are likely to connect with as many people as they can.

Moreover, hashtag means tribe, a group which people have similar interests. Therefore, in the tribe, people can communicate with others in high-context so that it can also be a benefit of using hashtags.

Enjoy your life with hashtags!

PR/Social Media Blog #2 - Youtuber

Youtuber

Japanese nonprofit organization, Japan Association for Financial Planners, makes a survey of elementary student's future dream every year. According to the survey in 2017, "Youtuber" was placed sixth in the ranking. Therefore, Youtuber is attracting a great deal of attention.

However, in many cases, people often consider popularity of Youtuber among elementary students negatively.

Youtuber makes a living doing what they love and they can work at home. But, in fact, the ratio of successful Youtuber is less than 10 percent. Some Youtuber are a stalker victim and their personal information will remain on the internet permanently. Moreover, in order to create interesting movies, some of them do things carelessly and their actions constitute a breach of law. The news will be reported in a newspaper or on TV so that "Youtuber" has a negative image.

It is okay to take to Youtube as a recreation, but it is not okay to take to Youtuber as a future career.
Attention must be paid to their activities.

Critical Analysis of Reading Blog #2 - Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying

"The Art of Social Media" which is written by Guy Kawasaki describes how to respond to comments in chapter four. In the class, we studied that more than three comments lead to arguments in you blog so that you should not post too many responses.

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like smartphones and computers. These days, the number of cyberbullying cases are increasing. According to TeenSafe (2016), 87 percent of today's youth have witnessed cyberbullying.

The bully is anonymous and can happen at anytime and in any place. I think the biggest problem is parents and teachers cannot access to all of their kids' accounts. That's why children tend to take it all on themselves. To solve it, some people says that parents should have access to their accounts in order to make sure their online activities are safe. However, I think it is invasion of privacy and it is an impracticable plan.

The shortcut to solve the problem is just to educate children in school and to know the existence of cyberbullying.
